An Architect Opens East Pavilion to Celebrate “Designed in China” Wares

After travelling and working at design studios in Beijing and Shanghai, KPMB architect Lily Huang and interior designer, Teresa Leung, saw an opportunity to introduce China’s robust design scene to the Canadian market with East Pavilion. “We think there’s some pretty amazing work happening in China right now that is completely challenging the idea of ‘made in China’ wares. In fact, ‘designed in China’ is a growing reality and we wanted to bring awareness to that,” says Hong. Among the stunning wares in their online boutique are Nankeen textiles, currently offered in pillow and pouch form, featuring an indigo dying technique from Shanghai that dates back 3000 years. The three-legged cast iron Ding casserole by Office for Product Design is similarly inspired by ancient bronze cookware.”We love supporting artisans, and it’s neat to incorporate something that would seem dated — even to my grandparents — in a modern way in our homes.” eastpavilion.ca
