Scrap Metal Gallery

Ask for directions if you want to find this gallery; it’s tucked away at the end of an alley. Or, look for the wordiest open/closed sign imaginable; a smart-alecky blue-and-white piece by local art celeb Micah Lexier. Owners Samara Walbohm and Joe Shlesinger had been hunting for a place to store their vast Canadian contemporary art collection, and decided instead to open their new space to the public. It includes works by ground-breaking artist collective General Idea, and sculptures that spin and float by Lois Andison. Vancouver-based artists are also represented, including Douglas Coupland and painter Graham Gillmore, whose glossy canvases combine text with vivid colour. The owners change it up every few months and host theatre and music events.
