Just when you thought indie coffee shops had officially jumped the shark, this cafe opens. Designed by Guido Costantino (of Buca fame) reclaim and modern motifs jive in owner Pouria Lotfi’s narrow space – with salvaged wood boards running the length of one wall, a rough- hewn concrete counter situated dead centre and a series of pipe-and-filament-bulb lights in a zigzag above. The décor is not its only success. Café Pamenar brews artisanal beans from Victoria’s Discovery Coffee Roasters. Espressos ($2.50), Americanos ($2.50), cappuccinos ($3), lattes ($3.50) and macchiatos ($3) are brewed to powerful perfection through a La Marzocco Linea. Pastries, delivered daily from Wanda’s Pie in the Sky and Circles and Squares – like the coffee toffee and chocolate cookie ($2) – are sweet enough to send you straight to the dentist chair.
