Witness: Edward Burtynsky

Edward Burtynsky’s environmental photographs demand to be looked at. They capture precious landscapes imprinted by human industry, and bring veiled manufacturing processes into sharp focus for the uninformed viewer.

Blending artistry with environmentalism, the urgent practice of this award-winning Canadian photographer takes him to distant climes – from a ship-breaking station in Bangladesh, where monster vessels are hacked apart in murky waters, to a gaping marble quarry in Portugal that evokes a deep wound. This exhibition celebrates his recent gift of 76 chromogenic prints to the museum – the largest such gift from the artist to date.
