Kader Attia: The Field Of Emotions

Artist Kader Attia challenges what he calls “modernity obsessed with the disappearance of injury” by foregrounding the imperfections – both physical and symbolic – of dispossessed peoples. His sculptural installation J’accuse (2016) presents wooden busts of WWI veterans propped up on crisscrossing industrial steel rods, their faces bearing the scars of war.

For Attia, disfigurement pushes people to the outer edges of acceptability, where the “able-bodied” can ignore their existence. Attia wants us to stare injury in the face and, ultimately, for communities to heal.
