Design Exchange’s annual fundraiser auction invites both live and silent bidding on limited edition furnishings, decorative objects, and such one-of-a-kind experiences as a trip to next April’s Milan Design Week. Led by auctioneer Brett Sherlock – who has held gavels for both Christie’s and Sotheby’s – the evening is sure to include a few opportunities to score things below their retail price. And who doesn’t love being able to tell dinner party guests that the seat in the corner was won “at an auction.”
What we wish we could be bidding on:
• Talk about a hot throne. The Smoke chair, designed by Dutch designer Maarten Baas for Mooi, is made out of handsomely charred wood and bachelor pad-friendly black leather.
• Nothing transforms a living room into a salon like a swish screen. The Blink room divider by Stellar Works is designed by local legends Yabu Pushelberg, and accented with playful hand and eyelash graphics.
What we’ll actually be bidding on:
• Jonah Takagi’s powder-coated Tier Table for Umbra Shift is inspired by the foundations of modern high-rises – making it a great fit for a downtown apartment.
• Tom Dixon’s mouth-blown Warp vase shimmers with an iridescent finish that evokes a petrol spill. It’s perfect as a belated Mother’s Day gift.
Tickets are $170, with proceeds benefiting the Design Exchange’s programming and permanent collection. The evening begins at 6:30 pm.
